Tiny Town

Tiny Town is what you would expect it to be. It's a tiny town in Morrison, Colorado, in the foothills, just outside of Denver. Jackson slept most of the time but everyone else enjoyed it. Tim's brother Larry came along, too.
It's a town that is just his size. He liked hanging out at the Opera House.
There is a tiny train that we got to ride for $1 each.
Heidi loves all things small, so she loved Tiny Town.

This outing was already a week and a half ago, so we are falling behind on posts. Our language training has gone well and we will give an update on it soon.

Our first few days in Colorado

After our visit to Tiny Town (pictures to be posted later) we visited the Mount Lindo Cemetery, which is the location of the Cross on the Mountain. Heidi and Jackson were enjoying the view of Denver from Davy Crockett's tombstone.
Jackson gets wedged in the back with all the luggage. Poor kid. Sometimes we'd move stuff around and Heidi would ride back there with him. We brought a lot of stuff. Most of it is for Jackson though.
Our first few days were spent in meetings, working over logistics at The Navigator's HQ. We got to stay on their property which includes this incredible castle. We did not get to stay in the castle but did eat breakfast there. It was great to see some of our old friends there and meet a few new ones. After our time there, Heidi and I introduced Jackson to my folks and my brother up in Denver. Then we spent the weekend visiting with some friends and a supporting church before heading down to Palmer Lake.
Glen Eyrie is like Rivendell from the Lord of the Rings books. Incredibly beautiful.

Right now we are at Mission Training International, learning about culture and how we learn language. So far so good. Two days down of 5 weeks!!

Nana fix

Since we were living with my folks for a couple weeks before we left for Colorado, my parents got to see Jackson all the time. So I think they are going through a baby Jack withdrawal. So here are a few pictures for Nana!!

Road trip!!!!

Jackson is taking his first road trip. We are leaving in the morning for Colorado. Along the way we will stop and visit my friend Chad in Iowa and Heidi's grandparents in Nebraska. We will be gone for six weeks and will attend a training on language and culture to help us acclimate easier in Africa. It should be excellent training. Taking a trip like this with a four month old is either brave or stupid and we'll let you know in a few weeks which it is for us. The time in God's Country will be busy but we plan to blog and keep everyone up to speed on our adventures.

1 car family

We are now a 1 car family. The Mazda, which I (Tim) bought from friends in 2001, is no longer in our possession. We had decided to go down to one car before our trip to CO since and save money on insurance. Initially we put the Mazda on Craig's List to see if we could get some money. Since there were a few things wrong with it, we could not get much. When I was in the shower on Monday, I felt that the Lord wanted us to give the car away. I had put something on Facebook about the car and a friend indicated that her family could use it. Right after I got that message I took the Mazda for a oil change. After causually mentioning that I was getting rid of the car, a guy at the Valvoline shop offerred me $550 for it. Heidi and I talked and decided that even though the money would look nice in our account, we needed to be obedient to God and give the car away. Our friends were happy to get the car and we feel much more peace about giving it away than selling it. It was a good car and served us well and hopefully it will serve our friends well for a few more years.

We have tenants!

Our house is finally rented. We don't know anything about the new tenants but we pray they are good. The property management company will take care things from now on. We can now focus on getting ready for our trip to Colorado and continue raising our funds for Africa. One less thing to worry about.

Living in Suburbia

We have successfully moved all of our belongings into Heidi's parent's house in Rogers, MN. If you are wondering where Rogers is, you are not alone. It is an outer ring suburb of Minneapolis, about a 30 minute drive Northwest of downtown. The only real bummer of being here is the long drive every time we go anywhere. The positives are many, but they include grandparents who hold Jackson every chance they get, an open basement to sort our belongings and store them while we are in Africa, and a deck for grilling and chilling. Running in this area is horribly boring but I hope to find some interesting trails. The first couple nights I had trouble sleeping because it was so quiet but I am getting used to it.

Our house is almost rented out but not quite. The process has taken much longer than usual but we are hanging in there and waiting it out. We should have some answers about potential tenants this week.

There has been a ton of offseason activity for my beloved Denver Broncos and almost none of it has been good. I think that the owner will regret firing Coach Shanahan, Jay Cutler will regret demanding a trade, and the Broncos will not win 8 games next year. I guess this is a good time to go to Africa. Maybe they'll be good again in 12 years. I was hoping that at least Cutler would get traded to the Vikings and my second favorite team would have a chance but I guess the Vikings enjoy mediocre quarterback play.

We're moving!

We finally have some good news with our house. Yesterday we gave the approval on some renters. There is one paperwork item that needs to clear and if it does, we will have a signed lease on our house in the next couple days. Praise God. That means we need to get our stuff out and moved to Heidi's parent's house on Saturday, April 18. If anyone from the Twin Cities is around and willing to help move some stuff, that would be awesome. We have the U-Haul truck starting at 1 pm and everything will be packed and ready. There will be hardly any furniture to move since we are giving most of it away. We just need a couple people in Mpls and a couple people in Rogers. It should go really fast.

Our next move will be to Africa. Hooray!

Done with work and Jackson's dedication

Friday was my last day working at the National Marrow Donor Program after three and a half years. I am grateful for the interesting people I got to meet and I learned some valuable lessons there. One thing I learned is that I am not cut out for a desk job. I am so much happier when I am interacting with people. I hope that all goes well for my friends at the NMDP. Heidi and I are one step closer to Africa.

On Sunday we had a Dedication Service for Jackson at our church. That means that during the service the pastor called us up and we agreed before the church family that we would dedicate ourselves to raising Jackson in a manner consistent with our Christian faith. Some of our family members were also there to witness and stand in agreement with us. My prayer for Jackson is that he fits the description of John the Baptist in Luke 1:68, “Everyone who heard this wondered about it asking, ‘What then is this child going to be? For the Lord’s hand was with him.” I also pray that as Jackson grows he fits the description of Jesus in Luke 2:52, “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.” I am convinced that he is a child with a special calling from the Lord but I am not sure exactly what that is yet. As he grows I am excited to see who he becomes. My job is to not mess him up too much in the process.

Happy Birthday Tim

Today is the 36th birthday of the love of my life, so happy birthday my sweet! I thank God for bringing you into my life exactly when He did. You love me so completely and graciously and my life is far more fulfilling with you in it. You challenge me to trust God in the little things and live life more spontaneously. You are a good man, a great daddy, and a fantastic husband. You make me laugh WAY more than you make me cry and sometime both at the same time! I love you so much, at times, I feel my heart would burst. I look forward with great anticipation to the work that God is going to finish in you as you lead our family. I could think of no one better to walk this journey with. Thanks for being you and for loving me. I love you babe.

2 weeks notice

Today I put in my 2 weeks notice at work. It's a giant step toward Africa. Heidi and I are trusting God to get us there. We are a little scared but mostly excited. I feel like the people who came to the new world and burned their boats when they got there. We are not planning to burn the airplane that takes us there, however. Please pray for us as we take this step and work hard to raise the last funds that we still need to be 100% funded.

Encouragement

Sometimes you need encouragement. More than any other kind of art, music can lift the soul. A couple nights ago, I (Tim) needed my spirits lifted. I was assembling diapers and listening to music on my Ipod. The first song that came up was “Horizon” by 38th Parallel. They are an obscure band that broke up after one album but it was an excellent album. I won’t quote the lyrics but the song basically reminds us of God’s promises. It was what I needed. Another song I always listen to when I need a pick me up is “The Sun Will Shine Again” by Rob Rock, another obscure artist. That one reminds me that no matter what happens, the sun will rise tomorrow. I have never found a song that lifts my spirits in the same way. The theme that both songs have in common is God’s promise that He will be with us. Not that life will be easy but that He will be there to walk us through.

Please leave comments on songs that encourage you.

An update in pictures

Am I confused, or do I have gas?

I love this blankie my great grandma made me.

How cute am I in my bathtime get-up? I love bathtime.

Just hanging out in my basket.

Well, Jackson is keeping us busy, but learning to sleep better at night. I have even gotten 8 consecutive hours a couple nights! Waittago little guy! We sure do love him and praise God for this addition to our family.

Fundraising is also keeping us busy and we are still pressing on to leave for Senegal this July.

What's up, papa?

Papa and Baby Jack

Note from the editor, I mean, Momma. Tim and I really wanted to be in Senegal by now, but I am so thankful for God's timing. Not only being able to have Jackson in a medical facility where English is spoken and access to a close ER (would one need that...) but I am so thankful for all the mom's that I am surrounded with and all the fantastic support and advice that I have received. I joined the mom's group at our church when I was pregnant and have been greatly blessed by those relationships and support. Having a new little person is a marvelous and taxing transition and I can't imagine dealing with this first month without all of the great support our friends have given, praise God for community!!

Smiles all around

I sure love it when Daddy rubs my head

In my teddy bear suit from auntie Ellie

It was a little warm this day, so I tied my sweatshirt around my waist...with a little help from Momma
I sleep a lot

Happy Valentine's Day!

Movie Review: Fireproof

A few years ago the gold standard for low budget, high quality movies was the Billy Graham Association. They have not made a movie in a while and the void has been admirably filled by an unlikely source, Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, GA. The Kendrick brothers, who are on staff at the church, wrote and directed the movie, and also played small roles. The locations, fire station and equipment, and even food, was donated by people in the community. The crew and actors, even the leads, were volunteers. The entire project was completed for around $500,000, which is an incredibly tiny budget for a movie this big. There were times when the writing and acting was weak, and a couple times it was distracting enough to take me out of the story, but the filmmaker’s enthusiasm and belief in the message made up for those shortfalls. If I was to describe the movie simply, I would say that it is better than it deserves to be. My expectations were low, but like the church’s previous effort, Facing the Giants, I enjoyed it. By no means is it a perfect movie, but it was good.

Special kudos must go to the filmmakers for tackling the subject of marriage. That is a hot topic in both the political realm and in the evangelical world. Putting forth a movie that affirms marriage, while showing how difficult it is for many couples, is not an easy task, and they have been taking shots for it. I applaud their efforts.

Great Scene: The Wrath of God hot sauce eating contest was an accurate portrayal of the way men act when they are bonded by a difficult job and when women are not around. (The name, Wrath of God, for a hot sauce, is genius.)

Great Line: Caleb Holt: Marriage isn't fireproof. Michael Simmons: Fireproof doesn't mean the fire will never come. It means when the fire comes that you will be able to withstand it.

Jackson's cousin, Carver

The other day, Jackson's cousin, Carver, said, "I know three Jacks. Jack in my class, Jack the dog, and Baby Jack. I only love baby Jack."

The picture was taken when they first met.

25 Random facts about Tim

This is something that people are doing in Facebook, so I thought I post it here, too. Just for fun. Also, there has not been a post in a while and I don't have any picture of Jackson with me, so this will have to do for now.

I was born in Spencer, Iowa, but moved away after 1 year.

I spent half my life in Denver, Colorado, but have only skied in Colorado 3 times.

I still love the Denver Broncos. One of the best moments of my life was when they beat Green Bay for their first Super Bowl win.

I have had stitches in my head on 4 separate occasions and fractured a bone in my right hand on 3 separate occasions.

In high school I got pulled over by the police 4 times and never got a ticket. In the first two years after college, I got 3 speeding tickets. I have not gotten one since.

I have been to 49 states. Alaska is the one I have yet to visit.

I played 2 seasons of Jr. High basketball at a tiny school called Aurora Christian Academy. I only took one shot in those 2 seasons, but I made it. Sadly, it was in the game against Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind, who had beaten us earlier in the year. True story.

In college I played on an intramural basketball team named Elky Pro, after the urinal mat. The requirement to be on the team was being horrible at basketball. We lost every game by an average of almost 100 points. We designed trick plays and had fans with signs and wore funny clothes. It was incredibly fun.

God gave me a highly competitive nature but very little athletic ability. Not a good combination.

I got Varsity Letters in Speech and Track my Senior year of high school. In Track it was a Senior letter but I was still happy with it.

I might be the only person in the history of Bethel University to participate in a Track meet and a theater production in the same day.

My first girlfriend, when I was 17, broke up with me after 2 and a half weeks.

My second girlfriend, when I was 20, broke up with me after 2 and a half weeks. That was when she told me that she already had a boyfriend in another state.

The first girlfriend, Holly, and I remained friends and her cousin, Heather Whitestone, became Miss America in 1995. We all hung out once and Holly told me that Heather would have gone out with me if I had asked her. Maybe she was saying that to be nice but it sure felt good.

I am an ordained, but not licensed, pastor in West Virginia. Only in West Virginia.

I ran my first Cross Country race in college with my shorts on backward. A girl that I liked at the time pointed it out to me after the race.

I spent the summer of 1994 doing ministry with gang kids in San Francisco. Part of my heart is still there.

I bear a striking resemblance to General George Custer. When I would travel to the Pine Ridge Reservation for work, I often wondered how many people realized that. (For the record, I am not a fan of George Custer. He was a bad man.)

I met my wife, Heidi, on a blind date. Chris Heng, my best friend, convinced us to meet. We were married 15 months after we met.

I worked for 6+ years at YouthWorks! Inc., leading mission trips. It is the favorite of the different jobs I have held in my life.

Heidi pierced my ear with a piercing stud and an old apple. She finally pushed it through on the 5th try. It hurt a lot. All to save a few bucks by not getting it done at the mall.

My mother cried when she saw my tattoo. I was 28 years old at the time.

My wedding day is one of the happiest days of my life. Getting married to Heidi was one of the best decisions I have ever made. She’s awesome and I love her a lot. If I had known how much fun marriage is, I would have done it years ago. Of course, Heidi would only have been in high school, so that doesn’t really work.

The birth of my son, Jackson, was amazing. I love the little guy so much. When we had to take him to the ER a few days after he was born, I cried for the first time in 20 years.

I have been a Christian my whole life. My faith means everything to me. If I am known as someone who brought glory to God and loved his family and friends, I cannot think of anything better.
